The Bug Bike – Art you can ride!

The Bug Bike was inspired by a set of poles with a naturally highly textured underbark structure which was revealed intact by our unique de-barking process.   Tracks visible on the surface of the poles were  made by a beetle larvae which lived under the bark.  This inspired the graphics, designed and applied via pyrography by Emma Coates  of Rain drops in Reverie.

The stiffness oriented frame offers sure footed handling on and off road, with great accelleration.

The BEAMZ Betula
This bicycle was built as a prototype product and to demonstrate the virtue of BEAMZ material and structures by putting the material head to head with the best structural materials available. Experienced cyclists have confirmed that it has handling characteristics comparable to high performance bicycles of conventional materials and construction with the soft ride which wood confers.

Frame and forks
The frame and forks including the 1.5″ steerer are made from birch, while the handlebars are willow. The joints are reinforced with hemp fibre and a bio-derived resin. At 11kg the bike is light and a thoroughly practical means of transport.

Mechanically it has 1-10 deraillure gearing giving single lever control over an ideal range for the hybrid design. The Shimano Saint mech has a short cage for a crisp change. A Raceface narrow-wide chain-ring takes care of chain retention.
Avid BB7 disk brakes handle the retardation.
